disclaimer: i call all publications that are not books rags because i used to use the paper to polish windows. so don't take it personally if i incidentally call this magazine a rag. and this isn't how it's written or the layout.
i bought this thing because of the promise of something written, hopefully in a positive light, about my personal bias, the boy group ss501.
so i go through it, and it's an old issue, it was out by last november? at least by the month on the first page it says so. therefore an ad for the the 2nd kpop con would be there. so i'm not too surprised to find tvxq there
it talked about how kdrama and some people's experiences on how they got addicted to these koreans. this page is what i can relate with. at least it has recent pictures of playful kiss and an earlier drama, personal taste. my two biases in the boys over flowers series, lee min ho and kim hyun joong.
i'm not too much into kpop, clearly, as this is the first time i've heard of hallyuwood, and i was floored, i find it too cute!
i'm not seeing the last and most recent album of ss501 on here, clue it's either green or silver. but then it says here albums that UR releases.
so a note from the editor and more albums that are actually available malls.
a few notes on how kpop idols dress like and a few ideas where to get them, i.e. etude house and the face shop. i dig the cam though. more fashion adv.
below are pages discussing the top idols of the industry. i'm not entirely sure how they got this list, but then the different top lists of whatever that come out of SK equally make me go huh???
so there's t-ara on the same page as the wonder girls and snsd and even kara. i suppose this is the girly sweetie page. and the next page go thru the hip hop crew which explains why one way is there. so it's not how much you've sold in terms of units or digital sales but the genre.
and then there is kpop royalty. how does one define kpop royalty. super junior is also dubbed kpop royalty but i see solo artists on the kpop royalty page. while shinee, mblaq and even infinite are all bundled up as the dance machines. under ONE bundle are naturally fti and cn blue but with them are 2AM and are written up as musicians. i suppose one's own vocal chords is one's instrument. hehehe
AND FLOWER BOYS that would be super junior and u-kiss, really? ok i'm not an elf [the suju fan club] but to bundle suju with ukiss and tag them as flower boys? i'm not a ukissme, i think ukiss' music is alright, but i went to their concert, and all i can say, i will support them but it doesn't mean that i don't think 'marami pa silang bigas na dapat kainin' [that they have a long way to go]. there's a bad-ass type so 2pm AND BEAST(?) are put together. i kinda get why after school is bundled up with BEG, their last albums were mature, while 4minute's was both fierce but had a soft cute side, too.
I SUPER APPRECIATE THIS one page that featured the other kinds of music available in their industry. from indiepop, trot hehehe, hip hop, NU JAZZ, and rock. it's not just pop, i mean it's a nation made up of different people, not everyone listens to kpop.
so it's an industry rag, i mean mag, that shows the reader the tip of the iceberg of their show business that deals mostly on the matinee idols...the way johnny depp was 20 years ago. the way leonardo dicaprio was when he was all about titanic.
this is a mag that went out of its way to name of the shows where the idols either fr the kdramas to kpop show up on tv. listing the variety shows the idols frequently guest. there's even a page where they focused on stars that act in tv shows but started out as singers or are in idol groups, i.e. ss501's eldest, kim hyun joong.
but a 3 page feature on 2pm? i get that they are ambassadors to sk, but 3 pages?
naturally, the following page would be on a former member of 2pm.
then it showed here what some pinoys do to see their idols. yep, some of us do save up, and fly off to a foreign country, sometimes for the first time, to be able to attend a concert or fan meet where the korean spoken will be translated into the native language of what ever country they are in, and yep, it's not english. only in manila will fan meets and concerts that will have interpreters translate what is spoken in english.
ok fine, beast, i liked them and it was cute when they were with kim hyun joong at araneta back in june 2010.
the fan club run down.
yey, finally, something about ss501, nope not about the album they released last may, not about leader's visit to manila, but about their break up. in fairness there's not much written about tvxq either but they have 2 full page pictures while ss501 does not.
oh yeah, the japanese and the koreans give credence to how one's blood type determines one's personality and compatibility with another person's blood type, like an organic zodiac.
places to get your korean fix
and the sites you should subscribe your rss to
ideas on where to go when you actually go to SK.
yey for kpop jargon and a few honorifics.
what's a rag i mean mag without some form of horoscope.
and yes, i too was surprised when the rest of the pages are up side down.
ok i get the cat eye, but the red lip? how many music banks, ingi, and other performances have we seen and there are very few if any that actually wear the red lipstick. sorry, A for effort, but them chicks from snsd, to kara, to boa either have the 'natural' look the way song hye go of laneige and full house looks like or like 2ne1 wears their makeup, NUDE LIPS with the smoky cat eye. [bwahahahaha naturally, i'd comment most on this spread]. and sorry the electric fan?? if you wanna go retro, that fan isn't old or old looking enough
yan yan ang retro na fan! and we saw reproductions of this fan [meaning not real antiques] in all places in robinson's gale...but hey summit is no longer in rob gale but in their really posh bldg further down edsa.
unless early 80's na retro? i remember the 80's it was the joan collin's, conney selleca, morgan fairchild fashion. yes i'm both 35 and remember that far back.
pinanindigan ko na, i no longer inverted the picture.
more fashion advice.
and super junior, back in november they had just started ticketing for their concert this feb. but ok, back in november [the date on the mag] they were still advertising the bonamana cd version c or d.
THAT'S RIGHT, APART FROM a couple of sentences commenting on the non-renewal of ss501's then management DSP's contract, ss501 was not bundled with any group, not bundled under any genre. no picture either, just leader. am i just blind? or didn't i see neither beast's or ahem ss501's eldest kim hyun joong's visit, performance and HUGE donation to a charitable institution here in the Philippines.
hay, oh well, if you're a 2pm fan this is a good mag. if you're interested in why a great deal of girls are so into kpop this is a good mag. but if you're already at least 2yrs deep into kpop then myx's special edition on kpop is a way better magazine to have and keep or have a back up of.
