Shopping Around Bangkok, Thailand

Some of you who follow me on my instagram or who liked my facebook page know that I went to Thailand, specifically and really, just Bangkok.  Bangkok is world renowned for the shopping and for its food and on my instagram and you'd see my foodie posts while I was there.
But this post will cover some shopping tips and where to go while you're in the main city.  This will be my second visit to Bangkok, the first was in 2010 for SS501's Persona Concert at Impact Arena.  so it was a kpop inspired visit.  My second visit will be quite similar sans any concert as i missed out on the mnet countdown performance just a month prior to my most recent visit to Bangkok, yeh, i realize I really am a fangirl fail. :'(
MBK and Centralworld are quite familiar malls to me, even after their revolution and their floods.  though there were major changes in the facade of MBK since my last visit.
our favorite funky tee and jeans place was still there. (Angelo is in MBK, 2nd or 3rd Floor, it's quite memorable since they're one of very few stores that sell authentic superdry [a japanese brand] items like t-shirts, jackets and bags.  err so why go to bauhaus? LOL
these funky vintage tees were on special and were only bhat99 (getting rid of old stock kind of sale)
i love these t-shirts, they're vintage and the cotton used is very soft.
and the designs are not common.
this one though was not on sale so this was bhat150.  but it's a kiss me shirt (not necessarily a u-kiss merch but it's close enough LOL)
we actually bought a delsey luggage at almost half the price, and it's authentic since we didn't get it a tiange bazaar type of place but a delsey sale in the middle of the mall right next to kinokuniya (this Japanese bookstore)
and holy cow, didn't i swear off uniqlo? hehehe well, i couldn't resist, with buying all those TOPs, i need bottoms right? and the only reason i even went in uniqlo was the fact that they were having half off specials, so i get half price AND a 7% rebate on a tax refund when i leave the country, not bad, and hard to resist. AT ANG DAMING PINOY, PHHHFFTT. ang hilig talaga natin sa sale di ba?
hohoho, isetan, it's not scary to go into isetan, bangkok! got this at the same store as the delsey luggage. i was counting the 7% tax refund LOL so it's still kinda cheaper in Bangkok considering it's case logic O.o
while going around the malls i was aware that kpop abound here and can be purchased like normal items.  so this RAIN concert dvd was at bhat400+ but was on special so only paid bhat200+ (sorry no tax refund at this record bar)
At Kinokuniya, of course I had to buy an Arashi magazine, it does after all, not only contain pictures of Arashi but a bag organizer, in matronly floral! woohoo! yes, certain japanese magazines are purchased for the gift within and not so much for what's written in it.  and of course, i'd buy anything kpop that includes lee min ho, kim hyun joong and u-kiss.  so i bought the magazine on the left as anyway it was on half off special.
I was advised there were more kpop stores in mbk and siam square but when i asked the concierge of mbk she directed me to 29 Plaza. well, it is after all the shopping gateway to MBK (so i guess if you don't want option overload, you come here!)
and there i found two, yep, just two stores that carry kpop merch, one mostly original (meaning official) so i bought the remain L and XL u-kiss t-shirt, and yayz! new lanyards ^_^
well anyway, i had to have something quite similar to what our boy here is wearing: hehehe
we skipped the river market, as anyway it's a tourist trap and a lot of the shizz there you can find in MBK, Pratunam, CentralWorld, Siam Paragon (the rather new and swanky mall na parang greenbelt 3) and this rather unfamiliar to me, Platinum (parang Harrison Plaza nila), and of course Siam Square.  soooo off we went the next day to Jatujak.  Oh lord, it's one ginormous divisoria combo of wet and dry markets times 3 or 4 the size of divisoria O.o  so if you'd rather pay extra about bht5-20 per item for proper aircondtioning and skip the organic bangkok thrift shopping stay in platinum and siam square
fine, pasok! naturally this is the dry area where you find clothing stores as sooooo many
more clothes, of course there's an entire section or two for wet stuff, fruits, plants, pets, etc, so it's like quiapo market meets arranque meets divisoria (yes, ang lola nyo used to frequent those places, after all, marge, you're so kalye ika nga ng classmate ko sa assumption san lo so long ago)
but lo, there's a neat knick-knack store ^_^
but here's what i come home with, K-dresses! and yes, these were available around Myeoungdong but in Bangkok it's half the price each dress with lining is only bhat300 but since i was buying two i only paid bhat500
i wonder where i'll wear these LOL
funky blazers!
really light ones
just to cover up when your wearing tanks, these are a tad pricey though, i spent about bhat500 on three items o.O already haggled down, too.  it's the price you pay for going to a unique store, and true enough, only this place had these.
ooooh these i think these are available in MBK but i was there already so i may as well.  the pants are about bhat300
while this was bhat200++
and the belt cost as much as the either the pants or the blouse LOL ang mahal, well hopefully they're as unique as she (the store owner said they are, hand made and all that blah)
but don't think bangkok is just a mecca for shoppers and store owners back in manila.  gamers can spend hours playing here, too.
this is Battlefield Bangkok located at 71 Sukhumvit 101/1 Road Second Floor Bangchak, Prakanong Bangkok 10260
oooh something i can relate to.
and ooh more stuff i can relate to.
weee
but like with all trips, it was eventually time to go.  what a pretty airport they have! i actually love all the airports i go to, except probably naia1 and terminal 3, ang boring lang at ang luma.  and the duty free is a 10min DRIVE away at multinational, mariosep unlike the international airports everywhere else you can shop and shop while waiting for your plane!
but first! like at incheon, before anything else! it's time to get your money back!
the hubby and i shopped at isetan for the case logic and delsey luggage and i shopped at uniqlo centralworld both stores allow for tax refund

  1. SO RULE NUMERO UNO - look for stores with the VAT Refund for Tourist sign or just ask the store clerk/cashier

    2.  HAVE YOUR STUFF (the items you purchased fr the stores that
allow  for vat refund) checked out at airport
BEFORE YOU CHECK IN YOUR LUGGAGE at your airline's desk
     3. Once you're done with the checking in with your airline
once you're done with immigration, THEN you
can REDEEM your VAT refund, they'll tell you where in this monster
of a megamall in length (or much much longer) of an airport
where these booths are.  and from here voila you have bhat, again
souvenir or you can use that to buy even more stuff at the duty free!
**foreheadslap** the Anna Sui stall I remember to be at the airport is now gone :'( but replaced, with .... drum roll please, Lunasol.  so i got me one of their liquid lipsticks in apricot.
ahhh my next project...thanks to my recent trips, the big bang concert, and more recently my payment for the  dream kpop fantasy concert, i had to hold off buying this beauty. :'( even though it's php5k less expensive buying the note 2.  even if i can call my credit card and tell them to spread out the payment for this phone for a year and still come away with buying it cheaper in bangkok, i still begged off (it was in stock on the other side of the airport)
my guardian angel telling me to save up for Eli?
what do you think?
Will I go back to Bangkok? sure, if i stay in malls, i'm good.  hehehe but i want to hug tigers next time and go to that bar on top of this really tall building (their namsan tower i suppose) one of the scenes in hangover 2 was shot there and the view, according to my boss is spectacular.

hey hey..its really nice to know that u've visited some vert unique places and even pointed out some unique shops at MBK. i've been hunting a k-pop mech shop in BKK and now that u've found a couple of places, can u guide me to how i can get there....near by shops or an address may be? thanks!

Marge said...

hi there, the kpop stores i went to are in 29 plaza. at MBK there is an elevated walkway connecting 29plaza and mbk. the conceirge told me how to get there, sadly i no longer recall. i just remember that 29plaza and mbk are connected to each other via an elevated walkway (meaning you don't even have to come out of mbk cross the street and enter 29plaza)

thank you for your reply. may be i can ask the concierge as well and fig. it out. its good to know that the shops are in the 29Plaza. it is also a place i've not been before. we generally do our shopping at MBK and return. guess i will add this to my 'explore' list as well! do u if they are still open and what is the name of the shops?

Marge said...

i did not take note of the names of the shops because i am not familiar with the Thai language. you can also go to siam square for kpop goods.
